Minneapolis man, Wells woman found with drugs, loaded handgun in Northfield; Giving Tuesday options; City launches ‘Sustainable Northfield’ podcast

By Rich Larson, News Director

A Minneapolis man is in custody on drug and firearm charges after being stopped by Northfield police on Friday.

According to the complaint, on Friday, the Northfield police stopped a car with multiple equipment violations. The car was driven by Lacy Dawn Clay of Wells, Minnesota. Jordon John Kelley of Minneapolis was in the passenger seat. Clay presented the officer with a driver’s license that had a void stamp through it, making it invalid. Upon further inspection, the two were found to be in possession of marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine and a loaded 9mm handgun. Both Clay and Kelley have received prior felony convictions, making the possession of the handgun a felony.

Clay has been charged with fifth degree possession of controlled substances and introduction of drug contraband into a jail, and if convicted faces up to six years in prison and a $13,000 fine. Kelley, who remains in custody at the Rice County Jail, has been charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted violent felon. If he is found guilty, he could face a $30,000 fine and up to fifteen years in prison.

Today is ‘Giving Tuesday’

After Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Local Brewery Sunday, and Cyber Shopping Monday, today is Giving Tuesday, a United Nations Foundation initiative that they define as a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.” For those who have anything left over in their gift giving budget after a weekend full of sales and promotions, a few Northfield non-profit organizations are running programs that some may find interesting.

Prairie’s Edge Humane Society is running their annual Christmas for the Animals silent auction. Items to bid on include pet toys, gift cards to local breweries and restaurants, jewelry, and even a set of doggie pajamas.

Local artist David Allen is selling commemorative prints and cards of the painting he has made of the Archer House on his website and is generously donating all of the proceeds to the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation’s Archer House Relief Fund, which will benefit displaced workers and businesses affected by the November 14th Archer House fire.

Laura Baker Services Association is encouraging to RSVP to the Beacons of Hope Gala, set for 7pm on Saturday night. The virtual presentation will feature a live, online auction. The event is free to attend. Bidding for the auction will open on Thursday.

Another timely recipient is the Northfield Covid-19 Response Supply Depot. Coordinator Kathy Hess said that they could use donations of microfiber sheets, new full or twin sheet sets, and of course, cash. The Northfield Covid-19 Response Supply Depot is located in the lobby of the Chamber of Commerce offices at 19 Bridge Square.

And the Rice County Salvation Army is well into their red kettle campaign. The organization is asking for both contributions and volunteers to ring the bell around the kettles in Northfield.

Of course, there needn’t be a promotion as a reason to donate, and Northfield has a number of non-profit organizations who would be glad to take you contributions today, or really, any other day of the year.
