A car caught fire on Trunk Highway 246 in Northfield, just south of the new Jefferson Parkway roundabout this afternoon, bringing the Northfield Police and the Northfield Area Fire and rescue squad to the busy area just as school was letting out at the nearby middle school.

Heather Ayerly of Goodhue said she was driving the 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix when she saw flames in her rearview mirror. She immediately pulled over and exited the vehicle along with her daughter Mickey.

Trunk Highway 246 was closed in between the middle school and the roundabout, while southbound traffic was diverted to Jefferson Parkway.

Ayerly said she and her daughter were the only people in the car. There were no injuries reported.
