UPDATE: Dakota County Sheriff – ‘Public is not in danger;’ Victim of Greenvale Township murder named by media sources

UPDATE, July 3, 6:11 pm: While authorities are still not saying the third suspect is in custody, a statement just issued by the Dakota County Sheriff’s office said “The public is not in danger.”

The statement said the suspects likely knew the victim, and this was not a random incident.

UPDATE, July 3, 4:30pm:  KSTP News is reporting the murder victim is Chris LaFontaine, and was named by family members. He has not yet been formally identified, and the Dakota County Sheriff’s Department will not confirm his identity.  Sheriff Sergeant Blake Pederson said more information will be released shortly. 

There have been unconfirmed reports that the suspect at large had been apprehended. Neither the Dakota County Sheriff’s Department nor the Northfield Police Department were able to confirm those reports.

July 2, 9:05 pm: Dakota County authorities and police from multiple jurisdictions are currently searching for a man possibly connected with a burglary and a possible homicide committed in Northfield this afternoon. 

Please be on the lookout for a person described as a white male, six feet tall, 155 pounds, dressed in dark clothing, with a shaved head on the sides with a pony tail. This man is considered possibly armed and dangerous.  

According to the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, a person went to check on a homeowner on the 31500 block of Foliage Avenue in Greenvale Township and saw three people leave the scene in what was believed to be the homeowner’s car. The witness called law enforcement, and when deputies arrived, they found the victim dead inside the home.

At 5:00 p.m. Northfield Police stopped a car near Maurice’s in Northfield, three men exited the vehicle. two were apprehended, and a third fled on foot. 

A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter is in the air and Police K9’s are searching as well. If you see anyone matching this description, do not approach him. Please call 911.  

This is a developing story. Further updates will be made as more is learned.
