“He Ain’t Heavy” is an independent film directed by local filmmaker, Mattie Lufkin. The work is an intimate portrayal of Mattie’s younger brother John, who was born mentally handicapped. After receiving a grant from Jerome Hill Foundation in St. Paul, Mattie shot many hours of footage featuring her brother and her family’s interactions with him at their lake property in northern Wisconsin. Stress and trauma ensued between all family members, causing Mattie to flee to the westcoast. Several years later, Mattie returned to the midwest with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. She has remained in Northfield since then, and is finally emotionally ready to share her, and her family’s story. 12 years in the making, “He Ain’t Heavy” is a work of love.
