In one of the local area’s closest elections in recent memory, Rice County Attorney-Elect Brian Mortenson defeated incumbent John Fossum. In total, 24,614 votes were cast in the County Attorney race, and Mortenson won by just 118 votes. While Fossum was able to rally voters in Northfield and Dundas, Mortenson convinced voters everywhere else in the county to vote for him.
While the County Attorney race is a non-partisan one, Mortenson had some benefit from the Rice County Republicans. In a post on the Rice County Republicans’ Facebook page, Mortenson was “recommended” but not endorsed by the party. Mortenson certainly attracted many of the same voters that voted Republican for State Legislature and Congress. In the end, it was just enough for Mortenson to take control of the seat.
