Tax forfeited property auction set for tomorrow; City seeks new members for Charter Commission; City Council will meet tonight

Rice County will make two parcels of tax-forfeited land available to the highest bidder in an auction during a special auction set for tomorrow.

The parcels – one in Bridgewater Township and another in Warsaw Township – have been classified as non-conservation lands and approved for sale by the Rice Soil and Water Conservation Board, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The property in Bridgewater Township, which is just under 40 acres, fronts Highway 19/Lonsdale Boulevard and includes nearly 33 acres of timber with a DNR-approved value of $33,380.

The Warsaw Township property, meanwhile, is located at 22901 Fertile Avenue in Morristown. It contains two lots on just about two-thirds of an acre.

The sale is set for 10:30 tomorrow morning, Wednesday, November 8th, at the Rice County Government Services Building in Faribault. Full payment, including fees and a 3% state surcharge, in accordance with terms set by the County Board of Commissioners will be due at the time of the sale.

Those wishing to view and walk the property will be required to sign a waiver of liability that will be kept on file with Rice County. Waivers can be completed in person at Rice County Property Tax Department or emailed to an individual at their request.

To tour the properties, contact the Rice County Property Tax Department at 507-332-6104.

Four expiring terms on the Charter Commission

The City of Northfield is actively seeking applicants to fill four positions that are about to be vacated on the city’s Charter Commission that would expire on December 31st, 2027.

The City Charter is the constitution of Northfield’s city government. The Charter Commission is responsible for reviewing and revising the City Charter to ensure that it meets all applicable State and Federal laws and meets the needs of the citizens of Northfield.

A statement issued by the City of Northfield said the Commission consists of seven voting members. Each member serves a four-year term as designated by State Statutes. Meetings are the second Tuesday of every odd-numbered month at City Hall. These are volunteer positions, and members do not receive compensation.

According to the city website, Commissioners Lance Heisler, Jack Hoschouer, Scott Jensen and CC Linstroth are all serving terms that will expire on December 31st.

Any registered voter of the City of Northfield may apply. Applications are due no later than 4:00 pm on December 1.

Paper applications are available at the Northfield Public Library or by emailing the city’s administrative associate and deputy city clerk, Sara Hoffmann or by calling 507-645-3060.

For additional information on the Charter Commission and a link to the online application, please visit the City of Northfield’s website at northfieldmn.gov/Charter.

Council will discuss Archer TIF plan, Northwest Area environmental review

And the Northfield City Council will meet tonight in the Council Chambers in City Hall.

The Council will hear a series of presentations to begin the meeting, one from the Defeat of Jesse James Days organizing committee, one from Northfield Chief of Police Mark Elliott on police activity in the third quarter, and Metronet will give a presentation on the construction of their high-speed, fiber-optic cable network throughout Northfield.

The Council will then hold a public hearing on the Tax increment Financing plan for the Archer project. After receiving approval from the Planning Commission last week, the Council must now sign off on the TIF plan. The council will not vote on the plan tonight, but a vote is expected later this month.

Finally, the council will discuss and vote on the Alternative Urban Areawide Review of the Northwest Area that has been identified as prime space for desperately needed commercial industrial growth in Northfield.

As always, the city and the council are asking to hear opinions and comments from the public. Anyone who wishes to do so is invited to come to the meeting and address the council on any topic they see fit. Those wishing to voice their opinions without addressing the council should email their councilors directly or post a comment through the eComment button on the “Agendas” section of the City Council website.

Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6:00.
