Today in the ArtZany Radio studio Paula Granquist explores doing what matters in life and discusses end-of-life issues with Barbara Krause, author and certified death midwife, Mary Carlsen of the Medical Aid in Dying group (MAiD), and Julianne Donaldson who shares a personal story about her husband’s terminal illness.

Barbara Krause is the author of the book series Sacred Bonds®: Seeking Light, Gathering Light, Becoming Light. This collection is a culmination of eleven years of observation, anecdotal evidence, personal and others’ life interactions, research, and listening to people regarding what matters most to them about loss, death, and dying–and why they can be hesitant to share their voice. She is also a certified death midwife and works with clients using her knowledge and experiences to help them transform their fears and anxieties. InTheThickofThings.com

Mary Carlsen is a St. Olaf Professor Emerita of Social Work and Family Studies. She was named the Social Worker of the Year by the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of Social Work (NASW) in 2023. She has worked in health care social work in hospital, nursing home, hospice, and home care settings for nearly four decades. Her primary research areas are end-of-life decision-making/advanced care planning, social work practice in end-of-life care, and global social work.

Julianne Donaldson will share her story about her husband Don Donaldson’s terminal illness. He wanted the option of medical aid in dying to end his suffering from stage 4 esophageal and stomach cancer. Julianne is now advocating for the compassionate option in her home state of Minnesota.
