The Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Service responded to a house fire call on Saturday morning at 2406 Elianna Drive.
Sometime between 6 and 6:30, a resident of the neighborhood reported flames coming from a fourplex multi-family housing unit. The fire department responded at 6:30.
Northfield Fire Chief Tom Nelson said the rental unit that caught fire was unoccupied. Northfield Police evacuated the three occupied units, just before the fire department arrived. One neighbor reported smelling smoke in her house just as police knocked on her door.
NAFRS Chief Tom Nelson said the damage was limited to the unit where the fire began.
“The fire walls did exactly what they were supposed to do,” he said.
The fire was completely extinguished by 8:30am. No injuries were reported.
Nelson said the cause of the fire could not be immediately determined, and the state Fire Marshall’s Office has opened an investigation.
