2024 Dakota County Fair open through this weekend; Deadline for Northfield Public Schools transportation approaches; City reminds residents of early voting for primary election

The Dakota County Fair is now open and will run through Sunday. The organizers of the fair, which is one of the largest County Fairs in the state, work all year long putting the event together, and take great pride in presenting something that families return to year-after-year, knowing what to expect and looking forward to something that is consistently meaningful.

The Heritage Village, one of the perennial attractions of the fair, will once again offer a pair of exciting attractions, as it did last year. On Saturday, the Northfield James/Younger Gang re-enactors will bring their award-winning bank raid demonstration to Dakota County, and another re-enactment featuring the Dillinger Gang will be on Sunday.

The Grandstand will host the Bulls & Barrels Rodeo tonight, followed tomorrow, Friday and Saturday by three days of Demolition Derbies.  The Johnny Holm Band will make their traditional Thursday night appearance on the Beer Garden Stage tomorrow night, beginning at 8:30am.

And of course, the various 4H shows and judging events that are the foundation of the fair will be happening every day.

The Dakota County Fair will run through Sunday. Admission to the fair is free, although Grandstand events do require a ticket, and those interested in the demolition derby are urged to buy their tickets early. Parking on the grounds is $10. The fair will run for the rest of the week from 7am until 10pm. It will close at 7pm on Sunday night.

Northfield Public Schools reminds families to register for transportation

The Northfield School District is reminding all families that the deadline to fill out the new transportation registration form is fast approaching.

Last year, Benjamin Bus and Northfield Public Schools implemented an opt-in transportation program. Where in the past, those who have wanted or required transportation have simply boarded a bus, the model has changed due to higher costs and concerns.

Eligible students must register in advance of the school year to receive transportation. Students wanting bus transportation must register by August 15th, in order to guarantee transportation beginning on September 3rd. If a form is not received by August 15th, the student will need to wait until after the first week of school to receive transportation. A bus form is required for everyone looking for transportation. If Benjamin Bus does not receive a form the student will not be added to a bus, regardless if you rode a bus last school year.

Registration forms may be completed through a printed registration form that must be filled out and brought to the Benjamin Bus office at 32611 Northfield Blvd, or registration can be taken over the phone with Benjamin Bus at (507) 645-5720. An online form may be filled out through the Family Access portal on the Northfield Public Schools website, but will not be available until after September 3. Those who are not certain if they have turned in a bus form should contact Benjamin Bus at 507-645-5720.

Early voting for primaries continues through Monday, August 12th

The City of Northfield is once again reminding all residents age 18 or older that Early Voting for the August 13th primary elections has begun in Minnesota.

Some Northfield voters will have choices in two separate elections. There are seven candidates for mayor and there are three candidates for City Council in Ward #2. The candidates with the top two vote totals will move on to the general election. Those who identify as Republicans and Democrats will also be asked to select a candidate for the United States Congressional Second District where Democratic incumbent Angie Craig is being challenged by Marc Ives, and Joe Teirab and a host of Republicans are vying for their party’s nomination. There are eight Republican candidates for United States Senator, and five Democratic candidates, including incumbent Amy Klobuchar. Those with the highest vote totals by party will be the names on the November ballot.

Northfield voters may cast their votes at City Hall by filling out an absentee ballot in the second-floor training room. An absentee ballot may also be filled out and returned by mail and must be received before the primary election date in order to be valid.

Northfield City Hall is open for voting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30am – 4:30pm, Tuesdays from 7:30am – 6pm, and Fridays from 8am – noon. Voting will also be open this Saturday, August 10th, from 9am – 3pm, and next Monday, August 12th, from 7:30am – 5:00pm. Voters must be in line to vote 15 minutes prior to poll closing time.

The Primary Election Day is next Tuesday, August 13th. General Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th.
