Northfield has “one of its busiest years” for City Construction Projects

It’s been a busy time with the City of Northfield’s project division. Engineering Manager Sean Simonson said, “It’s one of the busiest years of his 24 years of working.”

One of the most significant projects is the replacement of a culvert underneath the railroad tracks near the North Oaks Apartments on Greenvale Avenue. Simonson says that the area has suffered from flooding in the past and that this replacement will help avoid flooding in the future:

Yeah, yeah, it’s it’s that that little box cover that’s under the road tracks, which was probably put in 100 years ago. You know that with the development and everything else that you know has been added to that Lincoln Waterway area since that’s been in is just really overwhelmed that system. And this should definitely. Help with the flooding and share a lot of residents that live up there, know exactly what I’m talking about, but that would be another good project to get checked off.
(Sean Simonson, City Engineering Manager)

The city has been working with the rail lines to shut down the tracks for five days while the project is being worked on. Residents in the area will notice that it will be much quieter for that time. Construction is expected to happen during October.

The city is also working on adding a connection to the East Cannon River Trail. The connection will start at Gleason’s court near Arbys; Simonson says that this connection ties the East Cannon River Trail into the rest of the city:

So that’s going to be a really vital connection to that trail that, that trail doesn’t have a lot of connections besides the Dundas end. And then, you know, Northfield end by Culver’s or Babcock to get on that trail. So that’s going to add another connection again that connection. And you can come off to that bicyclist PEDs, you know, you kind of come into the commerce area of Arby’s in that area target you can get right to there. So it’s going to connect all that.

That project will be done at the end of September.

Simonson encouraged anyone who is interested in following the status of the projects to go to the City of Northfield’s website and sign up for project updates, which he emails out regularly. You can also go to the current project’s webpage on the city website under the “City Services” tab.

Faribault Police and Rice County Sheriff Arrest Domestic Assault Suspect

On Monday, the Faribault Police, with assistance from Rice County Sheriffs, were involved in a standoff with an armed suspect. According to a press release from the City of Faribault, officers responded to a call of a domestic assault incident in the 300th block of Second Avenue SW. After ensuring the safety of the victims and witnesses, officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect for approximately two hours. Using less lethal weapons and Rice County K9, police entered the residence and arrested the suspect without the use of force.

Suspect Zachary Tussing of Faribault could face charges of 2nd Degree Domestic assault, Terrorist Threats, and Felony Domestic assault. Tussing is currently being held in the Rice County Jail, and charges are being referred to the county attorney’s office.
