The Northfield City Council meets tonight for a work session, and there are two main topics on the agenda for the meeting. First is the redevelopment of 5th Street and Washington Street and of 5th Street and Water Street, which includes the Municipal Liquor Store. The Economic Development Authority and Planning Commission have several recommendations for the City Council about the redevelopment of the area. One of the significant parts of the redevelopment would be building a new liquor store. The EDA and Planning Commission have been reviewing the financial viability of the project and the possibility of building a multi-story facility with housing above the liquor store. The council will hear a presentation about the recommendations and the next steps of the project.
Also on the agenda is continuing the discussion about the city’s budget and tax levy. State law requires that cities set their preliminary tax levy before the end of September. In August, city staff recommended that the preliminary property tax levy increase be set at the maximum amount allowed by Minnesota law, which is 15.8%. It would be the fifth double-digit property tax increase in seven years. The council will vote on the preliminary tax levy at the September 17th meeting, and the final tax levy and city budget will be voted on in December.
Tonight’s meeting will take place in the Training Room of the Northfield Police Department, which means that there will be no live stream video. Since the meeting is a work session, there will not be a public comment section, but the public is still welcome to attend and watch the meeting. The meeting will start at 6pm.
