September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, and this year, once again Northfield will be hosting a celebration for the start month. The celebration is on Saturday at Central Park and runs all day. The first event is at 9:30am with Zumba. The majority of events will start 11am and run through the day with Wandering Puppets, Face Painting, the Arts Guild Inspiration Station, and there will be several other community organizations and craft vendors set up. At 3:30pm there will be a Festive Pet Costume Contest. At 11am will be the Latin America Parde of Flags, followed by the Northfield Youth Choir, which will be singing the U.S. national anthem in Spanish. Afterward, there are seven different performances on the main stage. Event organizer Angelica Linder says that every year, the celebration tries to highlight a different country; this year, the country is Guatemala:
There will be several different food vendors from many different backgrounds, Linder noted that the event is still free for people to attend:
“I’ve been telling families you don’t need to spend money if you don’t want to bring your snack, bring a blanket. You can sit in front of the stage, watch the whole event, walk around, have a conversation with all the different vendors, or I mean the community partners there. And if you don’t want to spend money, you don’t have to spend money.”
