The Northfield Education Association, the union for teachers in Northfield, has endorsed four candidates for the School Board this year. The endorsed candidates include the three incumbents, Corey Butler, Amy Goerwitz, Claudia Gonzalez-George, and newcomer Maggie Epstein. All candidates except for Andreas Thurnheer participated in interviews with the NEA. The other two candidates for the school board are Tristan Cox and Iris Lee.
In a statement sent to KYMN, the NEA praised the leadership of the three incumbents, saying that they “have demonstrated the leadership skills we need from our board especially by guiding through COVID, financial struggles and strengths, and ensured that we have a working relationship between all parties.” About Epstein the NEA expressed their appreciation for her connection to education stating: “while new to this position, has a strong background in education and understands the unique needs of different parties.” About all of the endorsed candidates the NEA said that they “expressed their full appreciation that education and the work teachers do is dynamic and ever-changing. The NEA supports these beliefs.”
In a statement on her campaign Facebook page, Gonzalez-George said “Our district teachers believe in the four of us. Humbled. Grateful. Up for the responsibility to govern in collaboration with the entire board and our superintendent.” Butler and Epstein expressed similar statements of appreciation on their campaign Facebook pages.
The four endorsed candidates have all previously expressed support for each other and Butler, Gonzalez-George, and Epstein have formed the “United for Northfield” group to work together as candidates.
The NEA expressed thanks to all of the candidates for participating in the interview process. You can learn more about the candidates for the Northfield School Board at the KYMN 2024 Election Guide by going to kymnradio.net/vote2024
