Northfield’s First Responders recently shared a few fall safety reminders for the public. Among them is having a Knox Home Box. In the case of an emergency the Knox Box will provide access for first responders to get into the victims home. The box is attached to a home’s garage and Northfield Fire & Rescue, Northfield EMS, and Northfield Police all have a key to open the box which will then open the door. Fire Chief Tom Nelson says it is similar to a realtors box:
“Think of it as like a realtor’s box, but the only Realtors are EMS, fire and law enforcement to be able to go in and check on you without having to kick a door. There’s lots of times where we’ll get a call from law enforcement saying we have to get in a neighbor. Hasn’t seen so, and so the fire department comes and we have to take the door. That’s a delay.” – Northfield Area Fire Chief Tom Nelson on the KYMN Morning Show
EMS Chief Brian Edwards says the delay can be frustrating and possibly life threatening:
“Nothing’s more frustrating for us than seeing inside a residence, seeing somebody laying on the floor not able to get access to them, and if it’s a if, we believe it to be a life threatening emergency, we will gain access to the building and usually that comes with some destruction of property, unfortunately.” – EMS Chief Brian Edwards on the KYMN Morning Show
The Northfield Rescue Squad has donated money to lower the cost of the Knox Boxes by $100, they can be purchased at the Northfield Fire Hall for $150 during regular office hours which are Monday-Friday; 8am to 4:30pm. The Knox Boxes are good for anyone in the Northfield Fire & Rescue District or Northfield EMS District, which includes Northfield, Dundas, and the surrounding townships.
