For nearly three decades, the Northfield High School partnered with Randolph Public Schools to teach courses in Agricultural Education. Interested Northfield students would travel to Randolph for any Ag programs. However, with declining interest in the program and tough budget cuts, the district considered cutting the program. However, the local Ag community responded and worked with the district to maintain and even expand the program. Starting last year, Ag Education is now being taught in the Northfield High School and the FFA program has been restarted.
The Ag Science Class has also brought hands-on learning to the high school with students taking care of several goats this fall. The goats live in one of the courtyards of the high school. Part of the Ag program has the students participate in morning chores, such as caring for the goats. Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann says this is exactly the hands-on education opportunities they want students to have:
“it’s actually exactly the kind of education that we are wanting to make sure that we provide that hands on opportunity for students, awareness for others. It’s it’s really great.” – Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann on the KYMN Morning Show
The program has garnered a significant amount of interest from students this year, with 45 students involved this year.
