Hospital Foundation Provides Opportunity for the Public to Support NH&C

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

In recent years, Northfield Hospital has discovered it was among the few hospitals without its own foundation. Hospital CEO Steve Underdahl recruited Julie Sullivan to create a foundation for NH&C. Sullivan said that she is incredibly passionate about the work the hospital does:

I believe passionately in what we do at the hospital. We take care of people from birth to end of life and everything in between and we have fantastic staff and anything that we can do to support that great work and keeping an independent local hospital in our community is important.” Julie Sullivan on the KYMN Morning Show

The Foundation “helps Northfield Hospital to exceed the normal boundaries of care for those touched by emergencies, illness, childbirth, and end of life.” The foundation supports the hospital with donations for some of the “little things,” like a patient emergency fund for food, clothing, and transportation. Or larger items to help support the overall hospital operations like new technology and equipment, staff training, and building projects. Foundation gifts are not used for routine business operations of Northfield Hospital + Clinics.

The hospital foundation is a non-profit organization and separate from Northfield Hospital and the Northfield Hospital Auxiliary although their missions align. Sullivan says the main difference is that the auxiliary is a member-based organization while the foundation is a donor-based organization. The auxiliary, which raises money for the hospital, most prominently through the book fair, relies on volunteers for its work. The foundation instead provides an opportunity for interested individuals or organizations to donate to the hospital. The hospital foundation is also staffed by Sullivan and one other person. However, both organizations are ultimately working to support the hospital, and the president of the auxiliary serves on the foundation’s board.
