Rice County Government Stays Busy With Tax Season and Opening of Public Safety Center

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

The Rice County government will be busy for the next few weeks. Next week on Tuesday, the second half of property taxes are due. Payments can be made in person via cash, check or money order at the Property Tax & Elections Office in the Rice County Government Services Building or mailed to the Rice County Property Tax & Elections Office. Payments can also be made online on the Pay Property Taxes page on the Rice County website, www.ricecountymn.gov, or by phone at 877-690-3729 and using 3321 for the jurisdiction code.

Paying from a checking or savings account carries no additional fee. Credit card payments carry a third-party convenience fee of 2.4% of the tax amount with a minimum $2 charge. Visa debit card payments carry a flat fee of $4.

The county will also be hosting an open house of the new Public Safety Center on Wednesday from 10am to 5pm and the public is invited to take a tour of the facility. To ensure the continued safety of the staff, cameras and recording equipment of any kind will not be permitted inside the building. After the open house the facility will close to the public to make final preparations for the jail’s opening.

The county will be holding two information sessions about the proposed sales tax referendum to pay for the public safety center. If approved, proceeds from the sales tax, instead of property taxes, would be dedicated to repaying the public safety center debt. The first information session is on Monday at the Community Room of the Northfield Police Department from 6-7pm. The second session will also be on Thursday, October 24th from 6-7pm in the county Government Services Building in Faribault. You can learn more about the referendum in the KYMN Radio Election Guide
