Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4393, the VFW located in Northfield, is accepting essays in its Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy competition through the end of the month. Conducted nationwide, this VFW-sponsored youth essay competition gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on a patriotic theme. Last year, 78,000 students participated nation-wide; however, much of the program happens at the local level.
The Patriots Pen program is geared towards students in grades 6-8 and the Voice of Democracy is for students in grades 9-12. Cash prizes are given to those who place first – third in both programs at the Northfield level. Those who win first place at the local level then go to the district level, which includes 20 VFWs across Southern Minnesota. Winners at the district level can continue on to the State and National levels, winning prizes at each level. Northfield has regularly sent students to the statewide competition and recently had a person place first in the Voice of Democracy at the state level and 7th nationwide.
Essays are due by October 31st and can be turned in at the offices of the Middle School, High School, or Arcadia Charter School. Homeschooled students are also eligible.
