October is Fire Prevention Month, and earlier in the month, firefighters from the Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Services (NAFRS) talked with students in schools about fire safety, but would like to remind all members of the public to take steps during this month to prepare. October is the perfect time of the year to check your smoke alarms, make sure the batteries are working, and, if needed, replace the alarm. Most smoke alarms need to be retired after 10 years.
NAFRS asked that parents talk with their children about proper ways to leave the house during a fire and is also reminding households to have a fire plan. A proper fire plan would include a place to meet after the fire, such as a nearby mailbox, tree, or other marker.
Andrew Tussing, a Captain with NAFRS, shared advice that has been new to fire safety in the last ten years.
“So, obviously fire needs oxygen to keep going. A lot of people, they’ll they’ll run outside and their doors left wide open if if you can shut doors that that helps isolate it and you know kind of doesn’t doesn’t feed the fire so to speak “ – NAFRS Captain Andrew Tussing on the KYMN Morning Show
Tussing reminded people that they should not go back inside a home after a fire has started, but to take these steps as they leave.
