Tonight is the last meeting of the Northfield City Council for 2024 and of its current composition. When the council meets again in January, Mayor-Elect Erica Zweifel, Councilor-Elect Chad Beumer, and Councilor-Elect Peter Dahlen will be sworn in and join the council.
Tonight is a significant night for the last council meeting, where the Truth in Taxation presentation and budget votes are held. In Minnesota, all government organizations, including cities, school districts, and counties, must hold a Truth In Taxation presentation, which shares in-depth information about the budget and taxes. Since the presentation is a public hearing, members of the public can speak about the issue for two minutes at the council meeting.
Currently proposed to the council is a 15.8% Property Tax Levy Increase, down from the preliminary levy set at 17.2% in September. It is likely that at this stage in the budget-writing process, we will see few adjustments to the budget.

KYMN will have stories about the budget in-depth later next week.
After adopting the budget and tax levy, the council will review and approve the long-range plan for Sechler Park.
