On Monday evening, the Cannon Falls Police Department received reports of a missing person in the 300 block of Larkspur Lane. Officers determined that the missing person was a 60-year-old male who had taken his dog for a walk in the woods. Officers were able to follow the footprints in the snow into the woods. Because it was night and the temperature was dropping, additional assistance was requested. Officers were assisted by the Cannon Falls Fire Department, Cannon Falls Ambulance, Goodhue County and Dakota County Sheriff’s Offices, the Dakota County Special Operations Team, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Fire Departments from Randolph/Hampton, Miesville, Northfield, Red Wing, Wanamingo, Goodhue and Zumbrota.
The initial and secondary search, using personnel and State Patrol helicopters, followed the trail of the person as they moved through the woods and along the river, however, the person was not located. The search was suspended at 2:20am and resumed at 9am on Tuesday. The active search was postponed Tuesday evening due to darkness and due to the high winds and falling temperatures on Wednesday, it will not resume until Thursday at the earliest for the safety of search personnel. Wednesday will be used for planning.
The Cannon Falls Police Department is asking people to not attempt to conduct a search on their own, as that will only hinder the official search efforts.
