Two local government organizations, the Northfield Public Schools and City of Dundas, will be hosting their Truth in Taxation presentations this evening. In Minnesota, all government organizations, including cities, school districts, and counties, must hold a Truth in Taxation presentation, which shares in-depth information about the budget and taxes. Since the presentation is a public hearing, members of the public can speak about the issue.
Voters primarily set the school district’s tax levy via referendums and during the presentation, the board and the public will hear how the approval of the High School renovation will change taxes in the district. Unlike City and County Governments, school districts do not approve their budgets at the end of the calendar year; instead, the state requires schools to approve their budget by the end of June. The Northfield School District has traditionally revised the budget every December as enrollment and financial information become more solidified. The Truth in Taxation presentation will include an overview of the budget. The board will also receive the audit reports for the budget. The school board will also hear a presentation about the Comprehensive Achievement and Civic Readiness goals required by the state.
The City of Dundas is looking at a 5.18% tax levy increase, driven primarily by increasing property market values rather than raising the city’s tax rate. The council adopted the same amount as the preliminary levy in September and overall seemed satisfied with the size of the increase.
This is the last regular meeting of the year for both organizations. We will have in-depth pieces about both government’s Tax Levy’s coming up in the following weeks.
If you are interested in attending the school board meeting, the meetings are held in the District Office Board Room; use Door #2 located on the north side of the District Office on 2nd Street West. The meetings are also streamed live on Zoom; you can find the link to the video at Northfieldschools.org, recordings of the meetings are also posted on the district’s YouTube page. The School Board meeting starts at 6pm.
The Dundas City Council meets at 7pm in the council chambers of Dundas City Hall.
