With a significant amount of snow in tomorrow’s forecast, we wanted to remind you about snow emergency-related policies in Northfield. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matt Hillmann said that he regularly talks with Benjamin Bus and snow plow drivers in the area, including from the city and townships, to decide when to cancel or delay school.
“We will be watching that throughout the night. If it is storm or we think it’s going to snow, we typically get up at 4:00 AM and we actually drive the roads. I’ve got a route on the southeast side of town that I do. Benjamin bus checks. I think there’s a total of four of us that go out.” – Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matt Hillmann on the KYMN Morning Show
Hillmann stated that the group gets together, discusses the city’s status, and then compares it with the forecast. Hillmann said he talks with meteorologists at the National Weather Service and other school superintendents in the area to help make decisions.
For students, the year’s first snow day will not be replaced by an E-Learning Day. If there is more than one snow day, all days after will be an E-Learning Day.
Will have posted in today’s news the full policies about how the district determines to cancel school.

The City of Northfield also reminds residents about the city’s snow-related policies. When the city declares a snow emergency, all vehicles can not be parked on any public street or public parking lot until they have been plowed curb to curb; violators may be ticketed and fined, which incurs a $75 fine initially and may be subject to towing.

Officials are reminding everyone to prepare their homes, workplaces, and cars with emergency weather plans, here’s MN Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Kristi Rollwagen:
“Things that you would want to have if you travel out in the winter; maybe a shovel, maybe some kitty litter, salt, looking at a way to keep a blanket, a set of boots and gloves if you should get stranded or get off the road, having a charged cell phone and a cell phone charger with you in the car.” – MN Homeland Security and Emergency Management Kristi Rollwagen, Audio courtesy of the Minnesota News Network
