Mayor Rhonda Pownell Shares Final Message

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

This past Wednesday, Rhonda Pownell stepped into the KYMN studios for her last regular interview as Mayor of Northfield. For the last 16 years, Pownell has served as an elected official in the city, first serving on the city council for 8 years and then serving another 8 as Mayor,  as well as serving as the President of the League of Minnesota Cities.

Reflecting on her career, the Mayor cited her biggest accomplishment in her tenure as bringing strategic planning to Northfield:

“Not all cities do strategic planning. But that fits Northfield beautifully because we like to be data-driven. We want to be thoughtful. You want to know and understand what are the issues. In your community, they’re based on data not just on a feeling right that you know you really need to make a difference in to help your community move forward. And strategic planning brings all of that to bear.” – Mayor Rhonda Pownell on the KYMN Morning Show

Pownell stated that she saw her role as not having more influence than other city councilors but instead acting as a “facilitator” of the council and city.

“you are one of a team. You have to figure out how to work together and support one another, and sometimes even get behind things that you’re not most passionate about because you know that your colleague is.” –  Mayor Rhonda Pownell on the KYMN Morning Show

The Mayor thanked the community for the years of support:

“I love my community and it’s been an honor to serve. My heart for my community has not changed. I really love this place and want us to succeed, and there’s tremendous potential there. –  Mayor Rhonda Pownell on the KYMN Morning Show

Mayor Pownell’s term ends at the end of 2024 and Mayor-Elect Erica Zwiefel will be sworn in at the first council meeting of 2025 on January 7th.
