Filing period for township candidates open through January 14

The filing period to register as a candidate for one of the Rice or Dakota County township boards is now open and will remain so through Tuesday January 14th.

Township Election and Meeting Day, when Minnesota township citizens gather to elect officers to the township board and to set the tax levy for the following year, is set for March 11th.

One seat on each township’s Board of Supervisors will be on the ballot, as will the treasurer’s seat in each of the Rice County townships except for Forest Township, where the treasurer is appointed, and not elected. Elected treasurers serve two-year terms, and supervisors serve three-year terms. The remainder of the clerk’s term in Morristown Township, which runs through March 10, 2026, will also be on the Morristown ballot.

In Dakota County, Waterford, Greenvale and Eureka Townships, will have one supervisor position on their ballots, while Waterford and Greenvale will be electing new treasurers, and new Township Clerks. No immediate information was available for Sciota Township.

Candidates for town boards must be eligible to vote in Minnesota, must not have filed for another office at the upcoming primary or general election, must be 21 years or older upon assuming office, and must have maintained residence in their district for at least 30 days before the general election.

Candidates must file with the town clerk. Contact the town clerk to learn when and where they are accepting affidavits of candidacy. All filing offices are open from 1-5 p.m. on the last day of filing, Tuesday, Jan. 14.

In addition to completing an affidavit of candidacy, candidates must pay a $2 filing fee.
