The Northfield Human Rights Commission will host the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 20th at 7 p.m. in the auditorium and lower cafeteria at Northfield High School.
The theme of this year’s event is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365,” and will feature keynote speaker Robin Wonsley. Wonsley is originally from Chicago, studied at Carleton College and completed a Watson fellowship before moving to the Twin Cities in 2014. After working with a variety of community organizations and coalitions for racial justice and worker’s rights, Wonsley was elected as Minneapolis’ first Black Independent Democratic Socialist City Council Member and was re-elected in 2023. Wonsley represents Ward 2, which includes the University of Minnesota and surrounding neighborhoods. She currently serves as chair of the Administration and Enterprise Oversight Committee and vice chair of the Public Health and Safety Committee.
The event will also announce the recipient of the Human Rights Award. The award is given to a local individual, group or organization that has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to the advancement of human rights in the Northfield area, either through volunteer or professional efforts.
The Human Rights Commission invites the community to celebrate and honor Dr. King and his legacy. The event will be in English and Spanish.
