The Northfield School Board meets tonight for its first regular meeting of 2025. The board will start with the organizational meeting. Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Gordon Moore will administer the oath of office for all of the board members, after which the board will elect a Chair, Vice-Chair, Clerk, and treasurer. The board will approve the schedule of meetings and stipends that each board member receives.
After the regular meeting, the board will call to order their first regular meeting. The board will hear a presentation from the District’s Director of Human Resources, Molly Viesselman, about a recommended new policy regarding Emergency Sick and Safe Time. Afterward, the board will hear a presentation from Simon Tyler, the Director of Prairie Creek Community School, and Laura Stelter, the Director of Arcadia Charter School. Both are local charter schools authorized by the Northfield Public School. In Minnesota, Charter Schools require an authorizer to review the school annually, and in the state, only 1 other school district authorizes charter schools. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matt Hillmann has repeatedly voiced support for the two. Prairie Creek is in its 22nd year of operation and Arcadia is in its 21st being authorized by Northfield. After the report, the board will hear an update on the high school’s construction.
Hillmann will then provide the January 2025, Enrollment Report. The last item on the agenda is a report from Director of Finance Val Mertesdorf with a preview of the budget prioritization that will happen. At the January 27th school board meeting the board will hear the annual financial forecast.
