Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and to celebrate, the City of Northfield’s Human Rights Commission is inviting the community to gather and honor Dr. King’s legacy. The theme of the event is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365.” The event will feature keynote speaker Robin Wonsley.
Wonsley is originally from Chicago, studied at Carleton College and completed a Watson fellowship before moving to the Twin Cities in 2014. After working with a variety of community organizations and coalitions for racial justice and worker’s rights, Wonsley was elected as Minneapolis’ first Black Independent Democratic Socialist City Council Member and was re-elected in 2023. She represents Ward 2, which includes the University of Minnesota and surrounding neighborhoods.
The event will also announce the recipient of the Human Rights Award. The award is given to a local individual, group, or organization that has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to advancing human rights in the Northfield area, either as a volunteer or professional effort.
If you are unable to attend the event, Northfield Public Broadcasting intends to record the event, and broadcast it on their channel, and post it on the city’s website.
The event occurs at the Northfield High School and starts at 7pm.
