The Northfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post recently recognized two Northfield students in the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen competitions. The national VFW organization hosts both competitions; the Patriots Pen is an essay competition for middle school students. The Voice of Democracy is open to high school students who write and give their own speech based on the theme: Is America Today Our Forefathers Vision?
Nationally, the program has over 27,000 high school students participating and $2 million worth of scholarships at all levels and competitions.
In Northfield, Allison Karl won first place in the Voice of Democracy, and Molly Albers received the runner-up. Bruce Stowe with the VFW described both the work of the middle school and high school students in the competitions this year as “fantastic” and thanked the students for participating.
“Very impressive. We give the kids a theme as part of the national event. And the contest with the middle school kids for Patriots Pen and the work that they did this time was was fantastic. Matched the theme and taught us a little bit about democracy.” – Northfield VFW Post Adjutant Bruce Stowe
Both received scholarships for their work and Karl will continue on to the district level.
