The Curbside Compost Cooperative here in Northfield is receiving a grant from the State of Minnesota’s Pollution Control Agency. The Curbside Compost Co-op collects organic waste from nearly a thousand homes in the Northfield area. Currently, after the co-op collects the waste, it is sent to Shakopee, where it is composted. Grace Brosnan, with the co-op, stated that while it was great to start the program, the group’s goal has always been to have a local site.
The grant for the project is $198,170 and will cover approximately 80% of the project’s total cost. The new facility near Northfield will provide a local source for approximately 600 cubic yards of finished compost each year.
“This was the exact type of grant we needed at a really good time for us,” Brosnan said. “We figured out the location, we got the zoning, and we received our permit. The pieces are finally coming together.”
The grant is part of $4.5 million in grants that the MPCA is giving out to similar projects across Minnesota.
