The Northfield Arts Guild and the City of Northfield announced the guild will become the new tenant of the 411 Water Street Building. The building is located between the Municipal Liquor Store and Post Office Downtown and is currently owned by the city. The space is an old office building, which, according to the guild Executive Director Micheal Johnson, is actually an ideal place for what they were looking for:
“So it’s, a lot of small little rooms, but perfect for artists to be able to have a space to work and to work as a community. And so the focus for that is really going to be young emerging artists. We want to support people who maybe don’t have the resources or ability to have a space of their own, but would be interested in collaborating. And so, yeah, an incubator space for young artists.” – Micheal Johnson, Executive Director of the Northfield Arts Guild on the KYMN Morning Show
Johnson stated that there are few spaces in Northfield for artists to work together and many are out of financial reach, especially for young artists. The guild is looking at hosting mentorship and training programs in the building as well.
“We don’t have artists solidified yet, but we definitely will have probably a dozen small spaces, And then there’s a couple of bigger rooms that I think we could make more like a coworking space.” – Micheal Johnson, Executive Director of the Northfield Arts Guild on the KYMN Morning Show
Furthermore, Johnson stated that the space will work well for establishing a retail environment similar to the current store at 304 Division Street.
“And I think there’s enough space to have like a pop up shop. So you could imagine the summer other times of the year having the door open and being able to buy work from these artists.” – Micheal Johnson, Executive Director of the Northfield Arts Guild on the KYMN Morning Show
The Northfield City Council approved the lease agreement unanimously on the consent agenda at the January 21st meeting.
