Prairie Creek Community School, an elementary school located in Castle Rock, was recognized this past year with the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools Innovation Award for their All School Book Club. Prairie Creek presented about the project at two national conferences. The school’s Director, Simon Tyler, shared that the project includes many gatherings as a whole school and activities together about one book. Here’s Tyler in a video from Prairie Creek:
“The All School Book Club was initiated by one of our teachers, Ryan. We were in conversation, around how to build community with children around printed text. Really, it started with a conversation between. The faculty in one of our professional development sessions and really grew from there.” – Simon Tyler, Executive Director of Praire Creek, in a video about the project
Here is Kindergarten and 1st Grade Teacher Amanda Solinger explaining the program:
“So what we do first is we read it to just our classroom. Then we move on to reading it as a whole school together in the gym, and then we move on to reading it in our bird buddy classes with those multi-age groups.” – Amanda Solinger, Teacher at Prairie Creek in a video about the project
Tyler says the experience has been a great opportunity for everyone in the school:
“We were just really curious about this notion of what if a whole school read a book together, adults, children around a chosen text, and what energy would that bring and what opportunities would that Engender for us to think about who we were as a whole school community.” – Simon Tyler, Executive Director of Praire Creek, in a video about the project
