While there may be snow, wind, and cold forecasted for this week, spring is closer than it may appear, with the Rice County Garden Day registration now open. The event is put on by the University of Minnesota Master Gardeners in Rice County and includes four educational sessions, a vendor fair, door prizes, and a silent auction. The educational sessions are each one hour long and start with:
- 9:30 a.m. “Industry-leading new plants for 2025,” Johanna George, Bailey Nursery
- 10:30 a.m. “Garden insects: Friends or foes?” Marissa Schuh, Extension integrated pest management (IPM) educator
- 11:30 a.m. Lunch and vendor fair
- 1 p.m. “Rare plant conservation: The power of community scientists,” Angela Miner, University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
- 2 p.m. “Caring for your houseplants,” My Buan-Bertucci, Hennepin County Master Gardener
The event takes place on Saturday, March 8th, from 9am to 3pm at Buntrock Commons at St. Olaf College. Registration costs $45 and includes lunch. You must register by February 22nd.
