On Monday at approximately 2:40pm, Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Services was dispatched for a fire at the Rice County Landfill. With the landfill beyond city limits and thus no fire hydrants available, the department deployed its rural firefighting equipment. NAFRS Chief Tom Nelson also sent a mutual aid request for Faribault Fire for their rural equipment as well. The fire was in one of the landfill’s bulldozers.
The landfill was closed shortly after, and all staff and visitors were reported to be safe. NAFRS was able to have water on the fire in under 15 minutes. Firefighters were on the scene for just over two hours.
The Rice County Landfill reopened on Tuesday at its regular hours.
