Last Monday at around 4:30 p.m., the Northfield Police Department received a call regarding found explosives in a garage. Officers responded to the 400 block of College Street S and learned that the family was cleaning a garage when they came across what appeared to be grenades. The grenades were suspected of being WWII era and were left behind by a family member who served in the military.
The Northfield Police Department requested the assistance of the St. Paul Police Department Bomb Squad. Shortly before 7:00 p.m., the bomb squad was able to safely remove the WWII Japanese grenades. The grenades will be safely transported by the bomb squad and will eventually be safely destroyed.
Evacuations were not needed as the grenades had been there for some time and were not moved by anyone. The police department relied on the expertise of the bomb squad technicians, who could safely remove them without a need for evacuation. There is no criminal investigation related to the incident and there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Northfield Police Department thanks the St. Paul Police Department Bomb Squad response and assistance.
