The Defeat of Jesse James Days Committee is seeking applications for this year’s recipient of the Joseph Lee Heywood Distinguished Service Award. Each year, the DJJD committee recognizes a local Northfield citizen who exemplifies the characteristics of our hometown hero, Joseph Lee Heywood. Heywood was the acting cashier at the time of the bank robbery on September 7, 1876 and ultimately gave his life to protect the funds belonging to the citizens of Northfield, housed within the First National Bank of Northfield’s vault. Each year since 1983 the Heywood Award committee has honored a Northfield resident to “remind us of our past and our promise to improve our community for the future.”
The nomination form asks four questions:
- Describe the nominee’s professional background,
- Describe the nominee’s volunteer background,
- In your own words, describe how the nominee has given to the Northfield community and contributed to its betterment
- Is there any other information, known awards, recognition, etc., about the nominee that you want the selection committee to be aware of.
The Heywood Award recipient is honored at the committee’s banquet held the Wednesday of Defeat Days. Also at the banquet is the auction of that year’s DJJD Buttons.
Nomination forms are due by March 15th, and you can find a copy of them available on the Defeat Days website djjd.org/banquet
There are just 188 days until the Defeat of Jesse James Days 2025
