Fire Chief Tom Nelson Offers Advice About How To Handle Emergency Vehicles and Situations

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Last week on KYMN, Northfield area Fire Chief Tom Nelson posed the following questions to everyone in the community:

“Say we’re we’re all in the same vehicle and we’re going down Hwy. 3. We just go past Woodley and the Allina Clinic and Bierman’s is on the right and we’re going down and were in the left lane and an emergency vehicle pulls up. You know, we can see it coming. What should we do?” – Fire Chief Tom Nelson on the KYMN Morning Show

Nelson stated that most people assume if they are in the left lane to pull off to the left. However,  Nelson instead stated that vehicles should always pull off to the right to allow for clear passing of emergency vehicles:

“Fire and police do not like passing on the right because then people see you go by and the nature is turned to the right, you know, so we always want the left lane.” – Fire Chief Tom Nelson on the KYMN Morning Show

Nelson noted that if you are at an intersection, clear the intersection and then pull over to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Nelson also has offered advice for people when in a car accident:

“I’ll pull up to a scene and there are three people standing outside their car and that is how people get killed. We’ve all got the vests and its our policy, but it is so so so dangerous. And what I’ve told my kids and if the car is safe, its not on fire, stay in the car because that’s your buffer.” – Northfield Fire Chief Tom Nelson on the KYMN Morning Show

Nelson recommends basic driving safety tips, like giving space to other drivers, staying off phones, and being alert.
