The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is reminding drivers to only travel when absolutely necessary during snow storms. MnDOT’s Mike Dougherty in Rochester says their work doesn’t end when the snow stops:
“If you end up in the ditch, it’s not just your misfortune: It suddenly demands the attention of our State Patrol, our law enforcement people, tow trucks. Often our MN DOT snowplows are out there, providing protection.“
“The less traffic on the roads, the better that is for everybody — for our emergency responders; obviously for our snowplows.” – Mike Dougherty, Minnesota Department of Transportation. Audio Courtesy of the Minnesota News Network

If you must travel MnDOT recommends slowing down, staying alert, avoiding distractions, keeping your headlights on, keeping your cruise control off, and wearing your seat belt. MnDOT’s Anne Meyer reminds drivers to give snowplows plenty of room to operate safely:
“We really ask that you stay at least 10 car lengths back behind a snowplow. Yes, they drive slower, they’re not always in their lane, but that’s what they’re trying to do in really clearing that path for you to stay safe.” – Anne Meyer, Minnesota Department of Transportation. Meyer recommends checking MnDOT’s site, 511mn.org, or smartphone app, to plan out your routes based on snowplow routes and road conditions.
