This year the Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Services (NAFRS) is set to undergo its regular ISO review. ISO or Insurance Service Office, which provides a rating for Fire Departments. Northfield Fire Chief Tom Nelson says that this rating ends up being reflected on property insurance bills. He said that the better rating means that ISO determines the local fire department is more effective and there is a lower risk of providing fire insurance for the area.
Nelson stated that ISO reviews many different areas:

“It encompasses everything from hydrant flows to apparatus to the amount of your training. We can now add Community risk reduction, which is fire code enforcement….We’re all talking about bringing commercial and industry to Northfield is. Those are some of the factors that they look at too, is what’s it going to cost to insure this thing, we’re going to build.” – Northfield Fire Chief Tom Nelson on the KYMN Morning Show
Nelson noted that, in his role now as the new full-time Fire Chief, being able to implement fire code enforcement can help the community’s ISO rating.
Nelson said that they are at the very beginning of this process, which will take place late this year. The department will provide updates closer to the review. Nelson believes the department will likely receive a good rating this year.
