With a couple of days of nice weather recently, many people have been taking the opportunity to take advantage of the spring weather and get outside. However, the Minnesota Department of Nature Resources is advising folks, to plan ahead before they go and check each parks website before going.
In a statement from the DNR: “Minnesota’s yo-yoing weather is creating unsafe trail conditions across the state. We are seeing last week’s snowfall melt into standing water and then freeze overnight, only to thaw again during the day.” The DNR cited an example at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, where the trail to Hidden Falls has been closed due to river flooding 8 inches at times over the bank.
The DNR advised visitors to any state park in Minnesota to check the individual park’s webpage for any park alerts and notices. The alerts for each park can be found at the top of that webpage.
Sara Joy Berhow with the DNR still encouraged folks to get out and enjoy the outdoors:
“We know that our parks are really busy in the summer, but they’re not quite as busy in winter, so we hope that people will go outside and maybe see their favorite park in a new light at a different time of the year with some different perspectives. Or maybe. An opportunity to go try a new park.” – Sara Joy Berhow with the DNR, Audio Courtesy of the Minnesota News Network
The DNR reminds everyone that they should recreate responsibly and help preserve the parks by staying on the designated trails and collecting any trash you have.
