At last week’s Northfield City Council meeting, Councilor Chad Beumer, with the support of Councilor Peter Dahlen, proposed a resolution to amend the city’s Art Allowance. Currently, city ordinances state that for any project, 1% of the project’s funds must go to public art. Beumer’s amendment proposes lowering the Art Allowance from 1% to 0.5% and also implementing a dollar cap on the item.

already been meeting for 4 hours and still had several items left on the agenda. Councilor Brad Ness moved that the item be postponed for discussion in May, which the council agreed to. This will also provide time for staff to create a full report on the Art Allowance costs over the last several years, which was also requested by the council Tuesday evening. With little discussion Tuesday, we heard few Council members’ opinions on the matter. However, the next morning on KYMN we did hear Mayor Erica Zwiefel’s opinion.
“What are your intended outcomes and your goals. And I was listening last night and I heard the goals are reduce the tax implications on large projects we’ve had a couple of really large projects coming at us which we didn’t have that level of project when this policy was developed, I was on the Council at the time when it was developed and so we weren’t seeing,, $40 to $80 million price tags at that point.”– Northfield Mayor Erica Zweifel on the KYMN Morning Show
Zweifel noted the importance of the program and that she would like it to continue in the future:

“This policy is highly valued by the Community, and no one said they wanted to do away with the policy. I didn’t hear that at all from the dais.” -Northfield Mayor Erica Zweifel on the KYMN Morning Show
Will keep you updated about this when the item comes up again in May.
