Last Thursday, parents, students, teachers, and community members gathered to share their opinions on the $6 million in proposed budget reductions for the Northfield Public Schools. The event drew 177 people to the Northfield Middle School and started with a short presentation, followed by breakout sessions of about 20 people each. In each breakout session, community members got to share their opinions with at least one school district administrator and one school board member.

The evening ended with people gathering again in the auditorium to share their concerns with the whole group. Several of the concerns raised by audience members were filled with emotion, including sadness, fear, and anxiety. However, school administrators and board members helped moderate a respectful conversation and listen to everyone.

The School Board is now wrapping up the public input phase of the budget and moving into the plan’s final phase. The Board will meet next Monday for a regular meeting with a discussion about the budget on the agenda. The board will again meet on April 22nd for a Work Session meeting focusing on the budget. Then on April 28th the School Board will meet and approve the final budget.

All of those meetings start at 6pm and take place in the District Office Board Room; use Door #2 located on the north side of the District Office on 2nd Street West. The meetings are also streamed live on Zoom; you can find the link to the video in the agenda at Northfieldschools.org, recordings of the meetings are also posted on the district’s YouTube page. Typically, work session meetings are not broadcast on Zoom.

Will keep you posted with the details about this story in the future.
