Northfield Hockey Association Fundraiser for Ice Arena Ends on April 15th

The design of the proposed Ice Arena project. The arena would be located in Northfield at Honey Locust Drive and Cannon Road.

The Northfield Hockey Association is entering the final phase of its fundraiser to build the new ice arena. Chris Kennelly, the chair of the group’s arena committee, stated that by April 15th the fundraiser will end so that they can give a final donation number to the city before the final construction design and cost is approved. The hockey association has been raising funds to lower the cost of the project overall to taxpayers and to add in some items that would not have been included in the project:

“This is something that’s going to enhance our community, right? I mean, we look at some, we got some great things going on right now with the school district. And their improvements to the high school. This is another piece that helps attract young families to our community and really builds us for the long. We know these things are expensive and take a hit on the taxpayers, but these are, well, things that drive families to our community and drive some economics to our community.” – Chris Kennelly, Chair of the Northfield Hockey Association Arena Committee on the KYMN Morning Show

So far, the organization has raised almost $4 million, as well as donated land for the project, which is valued at approximately $700,000.

Kennelly noted that hockey is an important sport and activity to have for youth wellness in the community, noting that the Hockey Association and Skating School both have had growth in the total number of participants in the last 5 years.

The project is being funded in a partnership between the City of Northfield, the City of Dundas, donations from the hockey association, and the profit from the sale of the previous ice arena. The Northfield Public Schools has agreed to rent the ice arena for 20 years for the use by the Raider sports teams.

You can find the donation pledge form and additional information about the ice arena by going to northfieldicearena.org.
