Hester St. & Highway 3 Stoplight & Dog Park Expansion Are Main Discussion Items At Tonight’s Dundas City Council Meeting

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

The Dundas City Council is set to meet tonight, starting with a presentation from the Dundas Dukes regarding their upcoming baseball season.

Following this, the regular agenda will include a proposal for the purchase of new radios for the police department. These radios, which meet industry standards, are essential for upgrading the department’s communications system, as noted in a memo from city staff. The total expected cost for the radios is $44,623.

The main focus of the meeting will be a work session centered around two significant projects for the city. First on the agenda is a discussion with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) about upgrading the traffic signal at Hester Street and Highway 3.

Currently, the lights at this intersection are suspended on wires, which MN DOT describes as a temporary solution. This intersection is notable for being the last location in Southern Minnesota with a permanent stoplight hung in such a manner. MNDOT will present their plans for the project and propose a cost-sharing agreement with the city of Dundas.

The project’s estimated cost would be $900,000, with a 50/50 cost-sharing agreement. Dundas would spend $450,000 on the project. In a memo, City Administrator Jenelle Teppen said that an unplanned project of that size and cost would be outside of what Dundas could agree to. MN DOT stated that they can complete a design for the project, and wait while the city saves money for the project. MN DOT is requesting a more definitive timeline from the Dundas City Council.

The second part of the work session is beginning a discussion about future expansions of the new Dog Park and East Cannon River Trailhead. The new dog park, parking lot, and trailhead opened this past year and have already been incredibly popular. Based on this popularity the council is asked to provide some input and feedback on the future of the park.
