Carleton College A Leader In Sustainability Work – Earth Day 2025 Series

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Earth Day is this week! And in the lead up to Northfield’s Earth Day celebration on Saturday, KYMN is covering some of the Environmental Do Gooders in Northfield.

We are starting this series by talking about Carleton College. Director of Sustainability at Carleton, Sarah Fortner, stated that the school is among of the leading higher education institutions in the United States.

“Carleton, is that we’re one of the top five higher institutions nationally, and the amount of carbon that we’ve drawn down through our operations.” – Sarah Fortner, Director of Sustainability at Carleton College

Rob Hanson, the Manager of Campus Energy, shared how other schools, governments, and companies now visit the school to learn about their geothermal system:

“We get requests all the time that in 2024 we had over 25 tours for a variety of sure parties and either contractors or other schools.”  – Rob Hanson, Manager of Campus Energy at Carleton College

Hanson noted that they even had a few international tours, with representatives coming from Poland and the Caribbean.

Carleton will be at the Northfield Earth Day Celebration with students running a water quality testing table with samples taken from the Cannon River. Will be talking more about the Northfield Earth Day Celebration later this week.

You can hear my full conversation with the group from Carleton today at 6:30am, on our website kymnradio.net under the morning show tab, or search KYMN Morning Show wherever you get your podcast.
