Today, we are meeting the Curbside Compost Co-op, which works to help make composting simple for everyone. The organization started almost 8 years ago with a goal to reduce the amount of waste ending up in the Rice County Landfill. Helen Forsythe also noted that disposing of food waste in landfills can lead to a release of methane as the food breaks down:
“When it’s not allowed to have enough oxygen, it releases methane, which is one of the contributing gases to climate change. And so there’s the space issue. There’s the emissions issue. And then there’s also the reality that when you take that food waste out of the landfill, process it properly in a composting situation, it creates a healthy soil amendment that you can add for your garden, for your farming.” – Helen Forsythe, Curbside Compost Co-op

While people can maintain their own small composting side, Forsythe noted the benefits of a larger composting facility like one that Curbside Compost uses:
“The other thing that is different is the higher volume you have. There’s just there’s more microorganisms doing their thing, and like kind of cooking that pile so you can compost things on a big scale that you wouldn’t want to do in your backyard, such as meat, bones, compostable plastics. All of those things are things that you would not want to put in your backyard because it would. Take so, so, so long.” – Helen Forsythe, Curbside Compost Co-op
