The Northfield Community Cleans Up Veterans Memorial Park Ahead of Service

This past Sunday, about 20 volunteers gathered at the Northfield Area Veterans Memorial Park to help prepare the park for the annual service held every Memorial Day. Volunteers cleared down tree branches, leaves, and overall landscaping work; the cleanup was led by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4393.

The event was also a time for the VFW to recognize the work of first responders in the community and to provide a free picnic lunch for the Northfield area firefighters, paramedics, and police officers. In fact, the event was well timed as the fire department was returning from a fire call as the picnic started, and several members walked over.

VFW members and volunteers hosted an appreciation picnic for Northfield first responders while cleaning up Veterans Memorial Park this past Sunday.

On Memorial Day, a service hosted by the VFW and American Legion will recognize Veterans and their service. Tracy Closson, the Commander of the Northfield VFW, noted that a main part of the service is recognizing the Veterans who passed away in the last year:

“We recognize all the fallen veterans from Northfield, is that is that. The Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts, they will present a carnation on each monument.” – Tracy Closson, Commander of the Northfield VFW #4393 on the KYMN Morning Show

Also part of the program includes an address from local veterans, a keynote speech, and several songs, including each service branch’s song:

“The program lasts about an hour and some great music and just a great program.”  – Tracy Closson, Commander of the Northfield VFW #4393 on the KYMN Morning Show

The program starts on Memorial Day at 9 am at the Veterans Park. In case of inclement weather, the program will take place at St. Olaf College Skoglund Auditorium. The program is free for all to attend.

Memorial Day this year is on Monday, May 26th
