The Northfield School Board meets tonight for its regular meeting. The main item on the agenda is a presentation by Wold Architects on the High School Renovation and Construction project. Since December, the Core Planning team and Athletics subcommittee have been meeting, and now the project is ready to move to the next phase. The core planning team reviewed and provided feedback on conceptual floor plans of the reimagined high school, and the athletics subcommittee discussed the expanded gymnasium addition, including court configuration, integration with existing athletic facilities, renovation of existing athletic facilities, and community access. The building process will now move on to design development, working with user groups to continue developing the building design.

Also on the agenda is a presentation about the School District’s Child Nutrition Budget and Community Education Budget. These two funds are separate from the budgets that were adopted at the last meeting and from the budget reductions. The Northfield School District uses a system called fund accounting, where separate sources of money are tracked in their own budget and dedicated to those items. Here’s Director of Finance Val Mertesdorf explaining more:

“Which basically means that we are required to track money. In separate funds to ensure that they’re all used for their intended purposes.” – Val Mertesdorf, Director of Finance for the Northfield Public Schools, KYMN News File

She noted the district follows state rules in this matter and money assigned for a purpose from the state can not be used in a different fund:

“Again, you cannot mix and mingle those funds. So if it’s for child nutrition for our lunch service, that’s a totally separate bucket of money that we cannot mix and mingle with some very extreme, limited circumstances.”  – Val Mertesdorf, Director of Finance for the Northfield Public Schools, KYMN News File

The board will hear the presentation tonight and then adopt the budgets for the two funds at June 9th meeting.

If you are interested in attending the school board meeting, the meetings are held in the District Office Board Room; use Door #2 located on the north side of the District Office on 2nd Street West. The meetings are also streamed live on Zoom; you can find the link to the video in the agenda at Northfieldschools.org, recordings of the meetings are also posted on the district’s YouTube page.

The meeting tonight starts at 6pm.
