Next Monday is Memorial Day, and the Northfield community will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Service at 9 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. In the lead-up to the service next week, KYMN News will be talking some time to share about the work and stories of veterans in our community. See all the stories in this series here.
Today, we are focusing on the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization. Unlike other veteran organizations, it is more of a network of different community institutions and volunteers who work together to help serve veterans and active military members in their community. Minnesota National Guard Family Programs officer, Army Lt. Col. Joseph Sanganoo noted that a significant amount of support is needed for those who serve:
“When a service member deploys, it really takes an entire community to support and enable his or her success on the deployment. And also for his or her family that stays back here, stateside.” – Lt. Col. Joseph Sanganoo, at the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon State Conference, Audio Courtesy of the Minnesota News Network

Chapters of the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon exist across the state, and locally, Pastor Brent Klein of the Northfield Chapter stated that their work is highly important, sharing some of the things they have done to help veterans, active members, and their families recently:
“If they need any kind of assistance, we’ve helped with car repairs, helping to finance some used cars, we’ve helped with home repair.” – Paster Brent Klein of the Northfield Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, on the KYMN Morning Show
The Northfield Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Steering Committee meets the second Tuesday of every month, 4:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Everyone is welcome to join.
Every year, after the Northfield Memorial Day Service, the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization has hosted a picnic at the Riverside Lions Park. In case of bad weather, the picnic will be moved to the VFW. The picnic is free and open to all; donations are appreciated.
