The Northfield School Board meets tonight, Tuesday, instead of the usual Monday, due to the Memorial Day holiday earlier this week. This meeting also marks the last regular meeting before the board transitions to its summer schedule, where it will shift from two meetings per month to just one. Later this week on Thursday, the board will have a closed meeting to discuss labor union negotiations.
To begin the evening, District Youth Council members Annika Reister and Alli Mathews will present an end-of-the-year recap, highlighting the group’s work and impact during to 2024-25 school year.
The board will then shift its focus to several significant budget items. Director of Finance Val Mertesdorf will present the proposed construction budgets for both the 2024–25 and 2025–26 school years. These budgets are part of the district’s construction fund — a separate pool of money used specifically for building projects funded by bond sales. In this case, the fund is for the High School construction project. The board is not expected to take action tonight, but will vote on these budgets at its next meeting on June 9
Board members will also discuss extending the district’s transportation contract with Benjamin Bus for the 2025–26 school year, which includes a 2% cost increase.
Policy updates include changes to policies related to personnel, student behavior, finance, and community engagement.

The meeting will end with an update from Superintendent Hillmann on the Northfield High School renovation project.
If you are interested in attending the school board meeting, it is held in the District Office Board Room; use Door #2 located on the north side of the District Office on 2nd Street West. The meetings are also streamed live on Zoom; you can find the link to the video in the agenda at Northfieldschools.org. Recordings of the meetings are also posted on the district’s YouTube page.
Tonights meeting starts at 6pm.
